Soulrabbi @ the AfroBeat Academy

Featuring Oghene Kologbo on guitar—an original member of Afro-beat pioneer Fela Kuti’s legendary Africa 70 band—Berlin based AfroBeat Academy gets its authentic Afro-beat groove direct from the source.

Kologbo recorded and performed with Fela from 1972 to 1978, appearing on more than 40 recordings, including classic tracks such as Lady, Zombie, and Shakara.

The man has lived in Berlin since 1978, when the musicians in Fela’s band defected after a concert at the Berlin Jazz Festival. Fela’s compound in Lagos, Nigeria was attacked and burned down by the Nigerian Army, and the musicians, 11 in all, decided to seek asylum in Europe.

Kologbo has been active as a solo artist and a sidemen throughout the 1980s and 90s. He released successful records in Europe and West Africa, and performed with artists as diverse as King Sunny Ade, Jimmy Cliff, George Clinton, Stevie Wonder, The Wailers, Roots Anabo and Osibisa.

The last year has witnessed a resurgence in the awareness of Afro-beat music, and AfroBeat Academy has been doing its part to promote this infectious dance-floor blend of funk, hypnotic West African rhythms and wailing horns. AfroBeat Academy is currently involved in an intensive collaboration with the Nigerian/German rapper Ade, initiator of the successful Brothers Keepers project. Their first recordings together will be released in June 2005 on the Berlin’s Piranha label. The AfroBeat Academy has just returned from a tour throughout Germany with the Brothers Keepers, supporting such artists as Dflame and Xavier Naidoo. A new member of the Academy family is funkmaster DJ Soul Rabbi, who will be releasing the first AfroBeat Academy single in Summer 2005. Together they have been hitting the funk clubs of Europe, laying new tracks in the studio, and furiously preparing for tours in summer 2005 in the US, Nigeria, Senegal, Germany and Holland.
